These gems of short films were made by members of the Yuwints community in the Ecuadorian Amazon, who were given two workshops in basic film-making skills.The storylines, script, casting, music etc were all decided by the community. With these films, the members of the tribe are hoping to share their way of life with the world and raise awareness of the threat they are facing from the oil industry. These are people who have no preconceptions of film through Hollywood or television, so they have created a unique art form.

Estas joyas de cortometrajes fueron realizadas por miembros de la comunidad Yuwints en la Amazonía ecuatoriana, que recibieron dos talleres en habilidades básicas de cinematografía. Las tramas, el guión, el casting, la música, etc fueron todos decididos por la comunidad. Con estas películas, los miembros de la tribu tienen la esperanza de compartir su forma de vida con el mundo y crear conciencia sobre la amenaza a la que se enfrentan a partir de la industria petrolera. Estas son personas que no tienen ideas preconcebidas de las películas a través de Hollywood o de la televisión, por lo que han creado una forma de arte única.

The Ecuadorian constitution promises communities “free prior informed consultation, within a reasonable period of time, on the plans and programs for prospecting, producing and marketing nonrenewable resources located on their lands and which could have an environmental or cultural impact on them”.

After the government gave an oil company permission to drill for oil on land belonging to the Sarayaku Indigenous Community without consulting them, the community took their case to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights. This amazing documentary, co-produced by Sarayaku and Amnesty International, journeys to the USA with the community to fight their landmark case.

La Constitución ecuatoriana promete a las comunidades “la consulta previa, libre e informada, dentro de un plazo razonable, sobre planes y programas de prospección, explotación y comercialización de recursos no renovables que se encuentren en sus tierras y que puedan afectarles ambiental o culturalmente.”.

Después de que el gobierno dio un permiso a una compañía petrolera para perforar en busca de petróleo en tierras pertenecientes a la comunidad indígena de Sarayaku sin consultar con ellos, la comunidad llevó el caso a la Corte Interamericana de Derechos Humanos. Este documental increíble, co-producido por Sarayaku y Amnistía Internacional, viaja a los EE.UU. con la comunidad para presentar su histórico proceso judicial.

The Consultation Without Consultation / La Consulta Inconsulta

This brave and brilliant documentary (currently only available in Spanish) shows why the consultation that the government held prior to the XI Oil Round auction did not meet any of the constitutional requirements: it was not prior, free or informed. The documentary was presented as as legal evidence before the Inter-American Court of Human Rights as the only audiovisual alternative to the official report of the Ministry of Hydrocarbons. Two months after publishing the documentary, and two weeks after the closure of the Pachamama Foundation, the documentary makers suffered a robbery in which their laptops and hard drives were stolen. Nothing else was taken.

Este documental valiente y brillante (actualmente disponible solo en español) muestra por qué la consulta que el gobierno llevó a cabo antes de la XI Ronda Petrolera no cumplía ninguno de los requisitos constitucionales: no era previa, libre ni informada. El documental fue presentado como prueba legal ante la Corte interamericana de Derechos Humanos como único registro audiovisual alternativo al informe oficial de la Secretaría de Hidrocarburos. Dos meses después de la publicación del documental, y dos semanas después del cierre de la Fundación Pachamama, los documentalistas fueron víctimas de un robo en el que se robaron sus computadoras portátiles y discos duros. Nada más fue tomado.
